(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – According to authors William Darity and Kirsten Mullen, the government of the United States should pay “reparations” to black Americans of $14 trillion.
In an interview with CNBC, the pair argued that the handout amount in question would be necessary to close the “racial wealth gap.”
Darity and Mullen are authors of the book “From Here to Equality: Reparations for Black Americans in the Twenty-First Century.” The former is a professor at Duke University, and the latter is a folklorist.
The pair declared in their interview that the US government was “culpable” for the slavery of black Americans and, later, the legal segregation in America, which made it financially responsible.
Mullen insisted that “the federal government was a party” also to the cases in which black people’s property was destroyed and to the suppression of black voters.
“The federal government must pay this debt, this is the entity that gave itself the right and the authority to enslave black Americans,” she said.
“The federal government is also the only entity that has the capacity to pay the debt,” the writer declared.
“When we’re talking about segregation, we’re not only talking about keeping black people separate from white people – we’re also talking about nearly a century of white terror attacks on black communities,” Mullen elaborated.
Darity and Mullen also claimed that the cost of reparations wouldn’t have to be shouldered by taxpayers.
“You don’t necessarily have to raise taxes to undertake these massive expenditure projects,” Darity said.
He pointed out as an example the federal government’s COVID-19 pandemic spending of $4.6 trillion.
At the same time, Darity issued a warning that “slavery reparations” could cause inflation unless they were rolled out correctly.
He proposed measures to reduce inflation risks, including providing reparation assets instead of liquid cash and spreading out reparation payments over a more extended period, for instance, up to 10 years.
“The key thing is that ultimately the discretion for the use of the funds must reside with the recipient,” Darity stated further.
Earlier this month, an advisory committee on slavery reparations in San Francisco said the city had to pay $5 million to each of its black residents for a combined total of at least $110 billion, up to $223 billion.
Before that, a reparations task force of California proposed that the state pay black residents $350,000 to $800,000 each, for a combined total of between $784 billion and $1.8 trillion.
What is your opinion? Do you believe there is any way US taxpayers should pay $14 trillion in “reparations” to Black Americans? Why or why not? Please share your thoughts and views by emailing [email protected]. Thank you.
