The investigation into Hamilton’s alleged attempts to secure a high-ranking position for an “unfit” subordinate suggests a troubling departure from the standards we expect from our military leaders.
On December 10, Christine Wormuth, Secretary of the Army, dismissed Gen. Charles R. Hamilton after allegations emerged of his improper influence in a subordinate’s promotion.
This exceptional decision marks the first dismissal of an Army four-star general in nearly two decades.
Hamilton, a distinguished officer with a four-decade tenure, is accused of interfering in the Battalion Commander Assessment Program (BCAP).
The Military.com investigation revealed Hamilton’s influence campaign over a subordinate’s promotion to a battalion command post.
Despite Hamilton’s subordinate failing evaluations, she was placed on the command selection list due to his alleged interventions.
Subsequent to Military.com’s reporting, the officer was removed from consideration.
Hamilton, in his defense, wrote to Army Secretary Wormuth, claiming the Army’s Command Assessment Program (CAP) harbors racial bias and asserting his communications with the panel were not inappropriate.
He denied attempting to pressure panel members.
However, his actions, including requesting a second evaluation and holding closed-door meetings, are said to breach Army regulations designed to ensure fair assessments.
“I did not ask for this, nor did I give him the impression I wanted her to be re-paneled,” Hamilton wrote.
The case has been referred to the Defense Department’s inspector general for a thorough investigation.
As the inquiry continues, Army Secretary Wormuth may choose to reinstate, demote, or discharge Hamilton from service.
Meanwhile, potential changes to the Army’s command assessment process are underway, a move seen as a reinforcement of leadership accountability and integrity.

Critics argue that Hamilton’s actions have cast doubt on the fairness of the military’s promotion system, highlighting concerns about external influence.
The Army typically selects panel members anonymously and close to the assessment to avoid improper connections.
However, this incident has prompted the Army to re-evaluate its BCAP, which was considered a significant improvement since its establishment in 2020.
The fallout from this debacle is poised to shake up the military’s internal processes significantly.
