(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – At the very end of his presidency, President Joe Biden has once again demonstrated his penchant for rewriting history with last-second pardons, this time by posthumously pardoning civil rights icon Marcus Garvey along with four others.
Such moves, while praised by some, also elicit questions about his administration’s prioritization of justice as a political tool.
The pardons include civil rights leader Marcus Garvey, convicted of mail fraud in 1923.
Biden, keen on showcasing his legacy as a champion of second chances, has issued more pardons and commutations than any president in history.
White House sources claim this act aims to rectify historical injustices and provide relief for those unfairly punished, The Hill writes in a report.
Critics, however, label Garvey’s pardon as a politically motivated afterthought, aimed at courting favor and diverting attention from more pressing matters.
Garvey’s conviction for mail fraud was widely criticized from its inception as politically charged suppression of his message of racial pride.
Critics argue that such a move, almost a century later, fails to address the systemic issues that led to such convictions.
“He was the first man, on a mass scale and level to give millions of black people a sense of dignity and destiny,” once said Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
Other notable pardons included Don Scott, Speaker of Virginia’s House of Delegates, for a 1994 nonviolent drug offense.
His journey from arrest to political leadership underscores a narrative that aligns with Biden’s second-chance rhetoric.
Nonetheless, many conservatives view these actions as a diversion from harsher legal accountability and a broader strategy to gain political favor.
Biden granted clemency to Darryl Chambers, a gun violence prevention advocate, emphasizing his administration’s focus on addressing past injustices.
Yet, in the context of today’s law enforcement and justice system debates, conservatives view such acts with skepticism, questioning the administration’s genuine commitment to justice reform.
“America is a country built on the promise of second chances,” Biden said in a statement.
“As President, I have used my clemency power to make that promise a reality by issuing more individual pardons and commutations than any other President in U.S. history,” he added.
For those questioning Biden’s motives, the pattern of these pardon announcements suggests a strategy of distraction while real issues remain unaddressed.
