(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – President Joe Biden poured cold water on the intentions of fellow Democrat Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, to visit Taiwan after major threats from Communist China, which claims the democratic, self-ruling island.
Taiwan, a rich ethnic Chinese island of 23 million people and an informal U.S. ally, has never been part of the People’s Republic of China, as Communist China is officially known.
The current government of Taiwan – which calls itself the Republic of China – is the successor of 2 million Chinese nationalists who escaped to the island after losing the long civil war to Mao Zedong’s communists in 1949.
The Chinese Communist regime in Beijing has always protested against foreign officials visiting Taiwan, fearing that this would encourage the island to declare independence from it officially.
Nancy Pelosi would become one of the highest-ranking U.S. government figures to visit Taiwan if she followed through on her plans.
She would be only the second House Speaker to do so after Republican Newt Gingrich went to Taiwan 25 years ago.
President Joe Biden, however, has spoken against the idea after vigorous diplomatic protests and threats from Beijing.
“The military thinks it’s not a good idea right now,” Biden told reporters at Joint Base Andrews earlier this week when he was asked about Pelosi’s intended trip to Taiwan, as cited by The Daily Mail.
Instead of letting Pelosi take her trip, which is known to infuriate the regime of the Chinese Communist Party, Biden declared that he would have a telephone conversation with Chinese dictator Xi Jinping. He said that would happen “in the next 10 days.”
Earlier this week, the Chinese threatened major retaliation against America if Pelosi were to visit Taiwan.
“[A Taiwan visit by Pelosi will] severely undermine China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, gravely impact the foundation of China-U.S. relations and send a seriously wrong signal to Taiwan independence forces,” Zhao Lijiang, the spokesman of China’s Foreign Ministry, stated.
“If the U.S. were to insist on going down the wrong path, China will take resolute and strong measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he added, sticking to Beijing’s claims that Taiwan is nothing but a Chinese province – not a pro-American, prosperous society with a vibrant democracy.
