(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – Iran is mulling committing a terrorist attack on the 2022 soccer World Cup to divert attention from its domestic mass street protests, the chief of Israel’s military intelligence has warned.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup is presently held in Qatar, another Middle East country, while Iran has been rocked for weeks by unyielding street protests after a young woman, Mahsa Amini, was killed by the regime’s “morality police.”
According to the Israeli military intelligence head, Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva, Iran’s ruling Islamist regime is growing “desperate” because it is failing to suppress the “civilian rebellion” in the streets.
More than 15,000 protesters have been arrested, and over 400 people have died during the protests so far.
“The death toll, the attacks on national symbols — this is very troubling for the regime, especially combined with sanctions, the existing international pressure, and the difficult economic situation,” Haliva stated during a conference organized by the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) in Tel Aviv.
“There is a real concern within the regime that it endangers the regime. At this stage, I do not see a risk to the regime…. but as the pressure on Iran increases, including internal pressure, the Iranian response is much more aggressive, so we should expect much more aggressive responses in the region and in the world,” the Israeli intelligence chief said, as cited by The Times of Israel and Breitbart News.
The FIFA World Cup, which started on November 20, has already been plagued by scandals connected with Qatar’s treatment of migrant workers, women, and LGBT individuals.
“I am telling you that the Iranians are now considering attacking the World Cup in Qatar as well. The only thing holding them back is how the Qataris will react,” Maj. Gen. Haliva said.
“Iran is on the whole field, from nuclear to riots,” Haliva said.
He revealed that in 2022 so far, Iran’s ruling regime committed about 100 attacks abroad. These include a recent drone attack on an Israeli oil tanker in the Persian Gulf and multiple cyberattacks.
“In London, they are preparing for an Iranian attack and they know what they are talking about. The U.S. is preparing for Iranian terror. I am not convinced that the [rest of the] world understands the power that the Iranians bring to the global level,” the head of Israel’s military intelligence noted.
The Israeli general warned that Iran might be close to developing nuclear weapons by enriching uranium at 90%. Because of that, Israel, which is constantly threatened with destruction by Iran, may attack the Iranian nuclear facilities.
“I would be happy if the U.S. was by our side [if that happens],” Haliva declared.
