Young is taking on the media giant for allegedly smearing his reputation and destroying his business.
As the legal battle unfolds, CNN’s attempts to hide its financial information raise serious questions about transparency and accountability in mainstream media.
Young’s lawsuit stems from a CNN report that implied his company, Nemex Enterprises Inc., was involved in providing money during the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan.
The veteran, who was trying to help desperate Afghans escape Taliban rule, found himself portrayed as a criminal by the left-leaning network.
Now, as he fights to clear his name, CNN’s actions in court are only adding fuel to the fire. A Florida judge ordered CNN to provide financial documents crucial for assessing potential punitive damages.
However, the network failed to produce these documents, claiming its finances are consolidated with Warner Bros. Discovery.
Judge Henry declared:
“Despite claiming it did ‘three weeks of newsgathering’ and ‘spoke with more than a dozen sources,’ Defendant’s representatives acknowledged it had no evidence that Young did anything criminal or illegal.”
“Yet, Defendant used the Black Market Chyron. This is sufficient evidence upon which a reasonable jury could find with convincing clarity that Defendant acted with actual malice to survive summary judgment on this issue,” he continued.
This suspicious move led to Young’s legal team accusing CNN of misleading the court about its net worth.
“Plaintiffs learned that CNN never intended to produce documents showing assets and liabilities (because they don’t exist),” a report said.
The court’s findings paint a damning picture of CNN’s journalistic practices. Judges from the First District Court of Appeal for the State of Florida described the situation as “a mess,” suggesting that CNN’s reporting may have been far from the truth.
Even more disturbing, the court found evidence of “actual malice” and “outrageous conduct” by CNN, warranting a full trial.
Judge William Henry did not mince words when he stated, “the record evidence could support a conclusion that Defendant aired and posted the Pieces knowing the gist was false or with reckless disregard as to whether the gist was false or not.”
Adding insult to injury, internal CNN communications reportedly expressed concerns about the accuracy and completeness of the story before it aired.
This revelation suggests that some within the network were aware of the potential falsehoods but chose to proceed anyway, further eroding public trust in mainstream media outlets.
Young’s legal team is now seeking additional discovery sanctions against CNN for non-compliance, pushing back against the network’s attempts to shield itself behind its parent company’s financials.
