A teacher in Ireland who is a devout evangelical Christian has been sent to jail by a judge for refusing to use in class the pronouns preferred by a male student “transitioning” to a “female.”
Enoch Burke, a teacher of history, politics, and German, was arrested on Monday for contempt of court and jailed at Mountjoy prison, Newsmax reported citing Newsweek.
Burke teaches at Wilson’s Hospital School in Multyfarnham, County Westmeath, in Central Ireland, west of the capital Dublin. The school is affiliated with the Church of Ireland.
“It is insanity that I will be led from this courtroom to a place of incarceration, but I will not give up my Christian beliefs,” Burke said after the ruling.
In June, the Christian teacher publicly snubbed the pronouns “they/them” chosen by a biologically male student claiming to be a female.
At first, the school asked Burke to “respect the student’s gender identity,” but the teacher declared that the request violated his constitutional rights and was against the Church of Ireland’s teachings.
Due to his anti-transgender stance, the teacher was placed on administrative leave in August for the duration of a disciplinary review into his case by the school.
However, Burke kept appearing on school grounds. He maintained that the school couldn’t suspend him because a suspension could only be imposed for “gross misconduct,” and standing for his beliefs on gender does not constitute such a violation of school policy.
The school and the transgender student took Burke’s case to court. The teacher told the court that he could not comply with the suspension and planned to return to the school grounds to do his job.
Because of that, Justice Michael Quinn ordered Burke to be sent to jail indefinitely – until he changed his mind and decided to comply with the suspension or until further notice.
The report notes that court crackdowns on teachers standing up for their beliefs and against enforcing woke and transgender policies “have become commonplace” in the US and the UK.
In one such case, in December, a Massachusetts teacher was axed after revealing in TikTok videos that she opposes critical race theory.
According to a report by The Washington Post from June, more than 160 American teachers have lost their jobs because of their involvement in “culture wars” issues.
