(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – In an alarming development, the towering Alaskan volcano Mount Spurr is threatening to unleash its fury after decades of silence.
With a 50% chance of eruption, this sleeping giant near Anchorage could disrupt air travel and shower the region with ash, potentially crippling America’s largest state.
The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) has been closely monitoring Mount Spurr, issuing a code yellow advisory as seismic activity intensifies.
Over the past 10 months, the volcano has shown increasing signs of unrest, with earthquake frequency reaching alarming levels.
“It’s had a higher-than-normal number of earthquakes for many months,” said AVO Scientist in Charge Matthew Haney.
“But over the past month, that itself increased, and also the location of the earthquakes changed,” he continued.
The threat of eruption is not just a concern for nearby residents as it could also have far-reaching consequences for the entire nation.
Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city with about 300,000 residents, is a crucial hub for air travel and commerce.
An eruption could potentially ground flights and disrupt supply chains, affecting the other states.
“Today there are even more flights coming in and out of the Anchorage airport, so if something like that were to happen that would be very disruptive,” warned Haney.
The Crater Peak flank vent, the site of historical eruptions in 1953 and 1992, is the most likely location for any future volcanic activity.
While relatively small, these past eruptions spread ash over large areas of Alaska and beyond, even reaching the North Atlantic within days.
The AVO continues to use an extensive network of monitoring tools, including webcams, seismic stations, and infrasound sensors, to assess the likelihood of an eruption and provide timely warnings.
“Sometimes there can be a build-up of magma beneath the volcano but it doesn’t have enough magma to ultimately proceed all the way and produce a volcanic eruption,” Haney theorized, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the volcanic activity.
“We expect, you know, more indications in our data prior to an eruption that would give us more indication that the odds were increasing of an eruption,” he added.
“We haven’t seen those yet, but we’re looking very closely to see that if those signals are produced at Mount Spur,” Haney explained.
As Alaskans watch Mount Spurr with bated breath, the potential disruption to air travel and commerce underscores the need for robust contingency plans to protect the economy and national security in the face of natural threats.
