(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – A black male resident of New York City has been awarded compensation of more than $2 million after he failed multiple times at a teacher’s test that a court later determined to have been “racist.”
As part of a series of judgments issued on July 5, 64-year-old Herman Grim of Queens was awarded $2,055,383 in lost compensation with interest for his numerous failures to pass the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test.
Between 1994 and 2004, all teachers and prospective teachers in the city were required to pass the LAST examination to get a teaching license.
The test was passed by 90% of white teacher applicants from 1993 to 1995 but by only 53% of black and 50% of Hispanic test-takers.
In 1996, a class-action lawsuit was filed against the NYC Board of Education over the alleged “disparate impact” of the examination. In 2012, Manhattan federal Judge Kimba Wood argued the teacher’s test had broken the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
The NYC administration stopped fighting the lawsuit in 2021 when the city’s then-Democrat, Mayor Bill de Blasio, set aside $1.8 billion for payouts.
“I can’t tell you how many times I took them. A lot! A lot!” Grim told The New York Post but couldn’t offer an example of how the teacher’s test was racially biased.
He owned a preschool business and was a substitute teacher till 2022, when he passed the current test and became a special ed teacher in Harlem.
Up to 5,200 failed test-takers like him may be awarded compensation. Some 3,000 judgments have already been issued from several hundred dollars to Grim’s $2 million, but many have also received pensions and health insurance.
At least 225 people have been granted at least $1 million for failing the former teacher’s test.
Many critics have decried the “racist” old test and the lavish spending fighting the lawsuit, then compensating the plaintiffs, but one Brooklyn principal disagreed.
“The standards are the standards. It shouldn’t be based on what would be easy for blacks or whites. To hire people who are not qualified and change the requirements because a certain group didn’t pass the test is bulls***,” he said.
