Dick Banaszak, a 65-year-old employee of the Public Works Department, stumbled upon a relic of considerable antiquity—a Copper Culture spearhead estimated to be 3,000 years old.
This find gains prominence due to its rarity in the southern extremities of the Great Lakes area, a locale not typically known for such ancient artifacts, Newsweek reports, cited by The Daily Caller.
The origin of this remarkable discovery can be traced back to Banaszak’s long-standing hobby of metal detecting, a pursuit he has enjoyed for over three decades.
His routine exploration was transformed when he unearthed the ancient spearhead.
Reflecting on the moment, Banaszak shared, “I went and sat under a tree. Just sat there, picked the dirt off it and was like, ‘Wow, this is thousands of years old, it was amazing, and now I have it in my hand.’”
Following his discovery, Banaszak sought the expertise of a local university’s archaeology department to authenticate and classify the artifact.
It was there that specialists identified the object as a socketed-tang spear point, a designation that further underscores its historical significance.
The narrative of ancient discoveries in Wisconsin is further enriched by another significant finding reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Archaeologists in the region unearthed ten ancient dugout canoes in Lake Mendota, dating back as far as 4,500 years.
This discovery was part of a continuing exploration that began with the initial finding of two canoes in 2021 and 2022.
The recent uncovering of the additional eight vessels underscores Lake Mendota’s historical role as a crucial gathering site for ancient peoples.
These artifacts span several historical periods, including the Late Archaic, Middle Woodland, and Late Woodland eras.
Banaszak, invigorated by his discovery and the rich history it represents, expressed his intention to retain the spearhead as a family heirloom and pass it on to his son, who shares his enthusiasm for metal detecting.
Banaszak conveyed his hope that others might also be inspired to explore and appreciate these glimpses into the past.
“It’s something I’m pretty passionate about. I’d like to see other people get out and enjoy what I like to do,” he said.
