(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – President Joe Biden tried to trick Republican US lawmakers into outbursts during his State of the Union speech with false claims, the GOP House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy declared.
According to the California Republican, Biden, in particular, made untrue allegations that the Republican Party wanted to “gut” Medicare and Social Security.
The claim referred to the Republicans’ insisting on federal spending cuts to agree to raise the debt ceiling after the US government reached its borrowing limit of $31.4 billion last month.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy advised the GOP lawmakers “not to take the bait.”
“The president was trying to goad the members, and the members are passionate about it. But the one thing the president was saying is something that he knew was not true. I just spent an hour with him. I’ve said it many times before: Social Security and Medicare are off the table,” the House Speaker told Fox News.
“[The president] tries to use it for a political ploy. But the one thing we need to be is we need to be smart. He’s trying to play politics with the debt ceiling by not negotiating, by lying about our position,” McCarthy went on.
Co-host Steve Doocy pointed out that Biden stated during his State of the Union speech on Tuesday night that the GOP wanted to “sunset” the social safety net programs, thus “hoping to bait the Republicans into a reaction.”
“It looked like Joe Biden was standing up to the Republicans,” Doocy said, citing polls showing independent voters were repulsed by Republican heckling and remarking.
“It looked like you were trying to shush your side of the aisle,” the journalist said to McCarthy.
The Republican House Speaker reacted by stressing that Democrats had previously raised the debt ceiling and “blew through it.”
“We need to be smart. Don’t take the bait. Stay with the American public about what we want to do, curb this runaway spending that the president has been spending so much,” McCarthy said.
“There’s a lot of places that we could have savings to make government more accountable and actually put us on a path to balance,” he added.
A New York Post report noted that Biden made accusations against the GOP while promising unity in his State of the Union address. He sparked an uproar among Republican legislators by declaring:
“Some Republicans want Medicare and Social Security to sunset. I’m not saying it’s a majority. Anybody who doubts it, contact my office. I’ll give you a copy. I’ll give you a copy of the proposal.”
“Liar,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) yelled.
“I’m not – politely not naming them, but it’s being proposed by some of you,” Biden continued.
He added that “we all apparently agree” that Social Security and Medicare cuts were “off the book.”
