(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – An alarming new development has rocked national cybersecurity as Chinese Communist Party’s hackers infiltrated the U.S. Treasury Department, risking the safety and confidentiality of sensitive information.
This alarming incident underscores the ongoing threat posed by foreign adversaries and raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the current defenses against cyber attacks.
In a letter to lawmakers, the breach was described as a “major incident” and carried out by state-sponsored Chinese hackers who bypassed existing security measures.
By exploiting a third-party cybersecurity provider, these malicious actors gained access to a critical key used to secure cloud-based services.
This key allowed them to remotely access user workstations and retrieve unclassified documents from Treasury Department offices.
Moreover, the Treasury Department confirmed the breach. It said that Chinese hackers “gained access to a key used by the vendor to secure a cloud-based service to remotely provide technical support for Treasury Departmental Offices (DO) end users.”
It continued, “With access to the stolen key, the threat actor was able to override the service’s security, remotely access certain Treasury DO user workstations, and access certain unclassified documents maintained by those users.”
While the Treasury Department claimed there is currently no evidence that the hackers still have access to their systems, this incident still poses a threat to China and other hostile nations.
The Biden administration’s weak stance on China has emboldened America’s adversaries, making incidents like this more likely.
In addition, the Treasury Department’s collaboration with the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the FBI to assess the impact is a step in the right direction.
Still, more must be done to prevent future breaches and safeguard our national interests.
