(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has busted 792 suspects in massive fake crypto investment schemes and romance fraud.

The EFCC’s raid in Lagos netted 792 suspects, including 148 Chinese and 40 Filipinos operating out of a seven-story building that could easily be mistaken for a legitimate corporate headquarters.

This sophisticated operation highlights the growing threat of organized crime syndicates infiltrating developing nations to exploit lax cybersecurity and prey on unsuspecting victims globally.

EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren revealed the sinister nature of this criminal enterprise, stating:

“Nigerian accomplices were recruited by the foreign kingpins to prospect for victims online through phishing, targeting mostly Americans, Canadians, Mexicans and several others from European countries.”

The scammers employed a devious tactic known as “pig butchering,” where they would seduce victims over social media or offer fake cryptocurrency investment schemes.

Once trust was established, the criminals would pressure their targets to transfer money, often resulting in substantial financial losses for the unsuspecting victims.

Furthermore, this operation illuminates the alarming expansion of Chinese organized crime groups into countries with weaker cybersecurity frameworks.

An expert on the matter, Ken Gamble, warned that “Chinese organized crime groups are expanding their operations into countries with weaker cybersecurity enforcement frameworks.”

The scale of this criminal enterprise is staggering. Investigators discovered high-end desktop computers and over 500 SIM cards on a single floor of the building.

The scammers targeted their victims using foreign phone numbers, primarily German and Italian, demonstrating the international scope of their operations.

EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede expressed concern over this trend, saying, “Foreigners are taking advantage of our nation’s unfortunate reputation as a haven of frauds to establish a foothold here to disguise their atrocious criminal enterprises.”

While the EFCC is collaborating with global partners to investigate potential links to organized crime syndicates, it is essential to highlight the importance of a united front against these sophisticated criminal networks.

As the EFCC prepares to charge the suspects, this case underscores the urgent need for stronger cybersecurity measures and increased vigilance from internet users worldwide.
