The malfunction lies in the folding mechanism, causing handlebars or stems to collapse unexpectedly during use.
This issue has already led to numerous injuries, including bruises and even broken bones.
In a concerning development for users, Segway found that the folding mechanism in these scooters can fail, leading to the handlebars or stem folding unexpectedly.
Reports have confirmed 68 instances of these failures, resulting in 20 recorded injuries.
These scooters, manufactured in China and Malaysia, were sold in the U.S. through prominent retailers, both in-store and online, from January 2020 to February 2025.
Consumers who own these scooters are advised to stop using them immediately and contact Segway.
Upon reaching out, Segway will provide a free maintenance kit, which includes tools and instructions to inspect and adjust the scooter’s locking mechanism.
To better address the concern, Segway emphasizes that the folding mechanism may require periodic checks depending on riding conditions.
Despite the recall, the company has announced that no returns or replacements are necessary.
“Over time, depending on riding conditions, the folding mechanism may require periodic checks and tightening,” California-based Segway writes on its website. “No returns or replacements are involved.”
The scooters concerned cost between $600 and $1,000, reflecting the steep price consumers paid for a product now deemed risky.
This isn’t Segway’s first recall incident. They’ve previously recalled their Ninebot P100 KickScooters and Ninebot Kids bike helmets due to safety concerns.
Additionally, Segway’s history includes various ownership changes and a tragic incident involving former owner Jimi Heselden.
For those seeking more information about the recall, Segway has provided several contact options, including phone, email, and their official website.
Segway could do more to assure the public, especially those who view these recalls as a result of short-sighted manufacturing processes that emphasize cost over quality, causing avoidable accidents and consumer stress.
“Segway is recalling about 220,000 Segway scooters sold nationwide because the product’s folding mechanism can fail while in use, posing a fall hazard that has left 20 people with injuries including broken bones, bruises and lacerations, the company said Thursday,” writes CBS News.
