(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – At the Culture of Democracy Summit this week, former first lady Michelle Obama claimed democracy in the U.S. is “fading.”
Obama’s statements came as part of her keynote address at the event organized by When We All Vote, a voting registration campaign launched in 2018 with the assistance of the former first lady.
The summit was focused on encouraging voter registration, participation, and activism, something Obama addressed when she stated: “No one has the luxury to sit out or stay at home just because you’re not feeling excited enough. If you don’t vote, other people will.”
She then emphasized that “it’s important for all us all to remember it’s not who you vote for. It’s not about whether you’re a Republican, Democrat, or Independent,” rather, she stressed, voting “is so much bigger than that.”
Obama then went on to warn attendees of the discrepancy between what is believed to be true about America and what emerges after voting.”
“Right now, when we look around at everything that is happening with voting and our democracy, it is clear that we’re seeing a deep discrepancy between what we tell ourselves about this country and what we see with our own eyes,” Obama contended.
The former first lady also remarked about change in the conception and voter participation in the U.S. democracy, urging “every American who cares about our democracy not to just get angry or dejected. I want you to get active.”
Obama continued, “We’ve got to change the way we think about our democracy. And we’ve got to change the way we participate in it. Not just every two or four years, but as a routine part of the way we all live.”
