The truck was halted at a state checkpoint in Chihuahua by vigilant Mexican immigration agents, with the assistance of the army.
More than 250 migrants, from numerous countries, were found cramped inside the double trailer truck.
The migrants were temporarily taken to immigration facilities for processing and status verification.
Authorities swiftly arrested the truck driver, handing him over to the public prosecutor’s office.
This reckless mode of transport, often employed by human smugglers, risks countless lives.
Tragically, in 2022, a similar attempt resulted in over 50 migrants dying under inhumane conditions in a hot, sealed truck.
This discovery amid heightened concerns over U.S. asylum policies, particularly after Donald Trump’s election victory.
Conversely, outgoing President Biden’s policy change has led to a decrease in U.S. border patrol encounters with illegal migrants, which dropped significantly from nearly 250,000 in December to around 54,000 in September.
With the intention of escaping violence and poverty, these migrants embark on long, treacherous journeys.
Many face hunger, exhaustion, and threats from criminals. Some even opt to join caravans, intensifying the dangers faced on their route to the U.S.
“The migrants, of various nationalities, were transferred to immigration facilities to check their status while the driver was handed over to the public prosecutor’s office,” said the Mexican defense ministry cited by Le Monde.
