Authorities reported on Sunday that the suspect, accused of the fatal shooting of a police officer on Saturday night near Cleveland, had been found deceased.

The incident unfolded when officers responded to a residence in Euclid, Ohio, around 10 p.m. on Saturday after receiving a call from a woman claiming she and her child were being threatened by the child’s father, according to Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer.

During their investigation in the backyard of the home, the officers were unexpectedly attacked with gunfire.

“Ambushed by gunfire, Officer Jacob Derbin was critically injured in the incident and later succumbed to his wounds at a hospital. Fortunately, no other officers were harmed,” Meyer noted.

On the following day, the suspect was found deceased in a residence located in Shaker Heights, Ohio.

Details regarding the cause of death of the suspect or whether there was an exchange of gunfire between the officers and the suspect remained undisclosed by law enforcement officials.

Chief Meyer highlighted that the standoff involved extensive efforts from tactical teams, and the suspect, identified by CBS affiliate WOIO as 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, refused to surrender. No additional injuries were reported on Sunday.

Shaker Heights, where the suspect was found, is approximately nine miles south of Euclid.

Officer Derbin, aged 23 and a military veteran, had joined the police force less than a year ago. Meyer revealed that Derbin was engaged and had plans to marry in July.

Derbin’s father is also a member of the Euclid Police Force.

“The Euclid Police Department asks that you keep the fallen Officer, his family, loved ones, and our agency in your thoughts and prayers,” said Capt. Mitch Houser of the Euclid Police Department in a news release.

The investigation involved “multiple law enforcement agencies,” according to Capt. Houser. Local residents recounted hearing about a dozen gunshots, as reported by NBC affiliate WKYC.

Meyer paid tribute to Derbin, describing him as “an amazing human being” with “a great heart” and “an incredible smile.” He added, “The world’s a better place with him in it.”

“We find ourselves grappling with a profound sense of sorrow and disbelief,” Mayor Kirsten Holzheimer Gail stated.
