NOW: Huge NATO Development

( – In a vital historic development, the US-led NATO military alliance has welcomed its 32nd member state – and it is no other than Sweden, a Western nation that has been neutral for over 200 years, since 1815, but which is now alarmed by Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine.

Sweden officially joined the mutual defense pact on Thursday, two years after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson arrived in Washington, DC, for the formal inclusion into NATO and attended President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address on Thursday evening, National Review reports.

“It’s official – Sweden is now the 32nd member of NATO, taking its rightful place at our table. Sweden’s accession makes NATO stronger, Sweden safer, and the whole Alliance more secure. I look forward to raising their flag at NATO HQ on Monday,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced on X.

Hungary, the last NATO country to do so, ratified Sweden’s membership last week.

Sweden’s application for NATO membership in May 2022, roughly three months after the onset of the war in Ukraine by Russia, signifies a notable expansion for NATO, now encompassing 32 members.

Another previously neutral Western nation, Finland, which has an 800-mile border with Russia, joined the alliance last year.

During a meeting on Thursday morning, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom, and Kristersson welcomed Sweden into NATO.

They reflected on the profound impact of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine on Sweden’s national security policy.

“This is a historic moment for Sweden. It’s historic for our alliance. It’s historic for our transatlantic relationship. Our NATO alliance, a defensive alliance, is now stronger and larger than it’s ever been,” Blinken declared.

He also dwelled on the realization among Swedes regarding the potential broader threat posed by Putin’s actions.

“Swedes realized something very profound, that if Putin was willing to try to erase one neighbor from the map, then he might well not stop there. And if he was allowed to proceed with impunity, not only would his aggression potentially continue, but would-be aggressors everywhere would get the message that it was open season,” the Secretary of State added.

He also noted that Sweden’s accession to NATO signifies the diminishing power of Russia and the durability of the international order.

“Today is a truly historic day. Sweden is now a member of NATO,” Swedish leader Kristersson said, thanking America for the bipartisan support from the U.S. Congress for Sweden’s NATO membership.
