This initiative seeks to bolster Mexico’s military capabilities and address staggering internal security challenges.
U.S. Special Forces will conduct training for Mexican marine infantry troops from February 17 to March 30, 2025, in Campeche, Mexico.
This program, approved by a Senate commission at the request of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, encompasses both conventional and non-conventional combat training.
The 7th Special Forces Group, with a longstanding presence in Latin America, will spearhead this training mission.
Eleven Green Berets armed with their own weapons and equipment will lead sessions in counterinsurgency, urban warfare, intelligence gathering, special reconnaissance, and amphibious assault techniques.
President Sheinbaum remains cautiously supportive, advocating for independent handling of national security issues.
Nevertheless, this U.S.-Mexico endeavor aims to enhance the Mexican Marines’ tactical skills, marksmanship, and counter-narcotics expertise.
The partnership is part of broader efforts to combat pressing security threats such as drug cartels and weapons trafficking.
“To bolster regional security and enhance military cooperation, the U.S. Army’s 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) is set to deploy to Mexico to provide specialized training to the Mexican Marine Infantry,” said the U.S. Army.
Breaking: the Mexican Senate overwhelmingly approved additional U.S. Special Forces training for the Mexican Marines, at President Sheinbaum’s request.

Despite pushback from Mexican leadership on U.S. military involvement, officials like Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, argue that controlling cartels would significantly diminish violence against Mexican journalists, judges, and politicians.
This security initiative, while focused on Mexico’s military readiness, also addresses the sovereignty concerns of both nations.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has reiterated America’s security stance: “We want them to secure their own territory and sovereignty, but we reserve the right – should there not be an ability to police international and violent cartels – to protect our own sovereignty as well.”
The cross-border military collaboration aims to forge a defensive alliance that counters threats like organized crime, and regional interference while ensuring each nation honors its counterpart’s sovereignty.
