As authorities work to piece together details, many question how such a tragic incident could have occurred under the guise of trusted care.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to a 911 call from a distraught father around 3:36 a.m. Wednesday.
He found his three-year-old daughter suffering from multiple stab wounds at the Villa Del Sol Apartment Homes.
Tragically, the toddler was pronounced dead shortly after at Sunrise Hospital.
Authorities arrested Marketta Phillips, 41, charging her with open murder.
Phillips, who may have been living in the apartment, had a history of run-ins with the law, including a recent Legal 2000 mental health crisis hold.
Investigators continue to probe Phillips’s relationship with the girl’s father.
Neighbors express their shock, highlighting the perceived fragility of trust in child caregivers.
“Our heart goes out to the family, I just can’t imagine what they’re going through right now,” said area grandmother Jennifer Elola.
Las Vegas police canvassed the area immediately after the attack, locating and apprehending Phillips nearby.
While police investigate the motive behind this tragedy, they describe it as an isolated yet unfortunately real incident.
The family of the victim remains unnamed by authorities as they grieve this unimaginable loss.

Community members see this as a wake-up call regarding who they trust with their children’s welfare.
Phillips’s prior legal issues, including a dismissed case of lewd conduct, only fuel further frustration in the wake of this dreadful event.
As police gather more details, they urge anyone with information to come forward.
It’s imperative the system scrutinizes those responsible for childcare to prevent further tragedies from ever unfolding.
