OUTRAGE: Firefighters Forced To Remove Flag Honoring 9/11 Heroes

(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – In an outrageous new blow that creeping leftism has dealt to American patriotism, New York firefighters have been forced to remove a flag that paid respects to the memory of 9/11 terrorist attack heroes because local lefties complained it was “fascist.”

Senior officials within the New York Fire Department (FDNY) directed a ladder company located in the East Village to remove a “red line” American flag that was put up to honor the memory of six firefighters from their squad who lost their lives on September 11.

This decision was made following a complaint by a resident who labeled the flag as “fascist” and a poll from a politically progressive local politician regarding whether the flag represented a “politically charged symbol.”

The controversy started on March 22 when a man, who claimed to be an employee of Democratic Manhattan Councilwoman Carlina Rivera, approached firefighters at Ladder Co. 11, The New York Post reports.

He arrived by bicycle and informed the firefighters that the councilwoman’s office had complained with the FDNY three days prior about the flag.

This flag, adorned with a red stripe, is a tribute to firefighters who have been injured or killed while on duty.

He denounced the flag as a “fascist symbol” and inquired about its continued display, according to sources.

In a letter from March 19, addressed to FDNY Intergovernmental Affairs Coordinator Madison Hernandez, Rivera’s staffer Lisander Rosario mentioned that the councilwoman’s office had been contacted twice by a “constituent” regarding the flag at the ladder company.

The constituent questioned whether the flag contravened department regulations.

“[FDNY staff] claimed it was to honor deceased firefighters, however, [the constituent] brought up that they could’ve used an FDNY flag rather than a politically charged symbol,” Rosario said.

“It is to both his and our understanding that private political symbols aren’t permitted to be displayed on public vehicles,” he added.

The email sought confirmation on whether any flags or symbols at Ladder 11 were in violation.

Shortly after the “constituent” departed from the firehouse, FDNY Deputy Chief Joseph Schiralli informed the firefighters that the flag had to be removed from the fire truck.

This directive was based on a department rule against “altered” versions of the American flag, introduced in 2020 by then-Commissioner Daniel Nigro and then-First Deputy Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, particularly during the peak of the anti-police Black Lives Matter protests.

Schiralli expressed his agreement with the firefighters that the directive to remove the flag was “ridiculous.”

The mandate to remove the flag provoked widespread indignation on social media platforms.

“NY firefighters were forced to take down a memorial for those that died on 9/11. What’s happened to NYC?!” wrote conservative Instagram influencer Rogan O’Handley.

Following the outcry, Commissioner Kavanagh and Chief of Department John Hodgens overturned the initial decision, allowing the flag to be displayed on the truck again.
