(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – In an outrageous development crippling household budgets, California egg prices have soared to nearly $9 per dozen.

An avian influenza outbreak and skyrocketing consumer demand are to blame.

With prices this high, hardworking families, already struggling under inflation, are feeling the pinch at the grocery store.

California egg prices surged 70% to $8.97 per dozen by December 2024 due to a bird flu epidemic.

This crisis demolished egg supplies, affecting every corner of the Golden State.

From Walmart to Safeway, grocery stores are reflecting these painful benchmarks.

The flu decimated about six million layers, triggering shortages that have left shelves barren.

Counties like Merced, Riverside, San Joaquin, and Stanislaus reported severe losses in avian numbers.

Nine cases of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in December intensified the crisis.

Eggs from large commercial farms vanished, taking 1.7 million layers with them on December 5 alone.

Nearly two more million followed throughout the month. Without these layers, California’s production dropped at its most critical time of the year.

“Production is likely going to take 4-6 months to fully recover, but only if we do not see any more layers lost to the virus,” according to Brian Moscogiuri, Eggs Unlimited Global Trade Strategist, cited by Wattagnet.

The USDA remarked on the disaster striking during a peak holiday season, pushing egg prices further skyward.

Retailers tried to keep supply chains intact, but consumer demands were towering. November saw egg productions plummet 4% as bird flu cases rose steadily.

Kevin Bergquist from Wells Fargo Agri-Food Institute pointed out how seasonal and pathogen disruptions have kept prices inflated since 2023.

The Consumer Price Index listed an 8.2% jump in national egg prices, the highest grocery increase nationwide.

The national layer flock is now under 300 million, the lowest since the virus first struck in 2022.

Safeway’s 18-count carton was priced at a shocking $12.99. Compared to March 2022, when the wholesale price was less than $1.50, Americans are being gouged at the checkout.

No respite is in sight as the nation waits for flocks to rebound over the coming months.
