Federal prosecutors argue for this sentence following his conviction in a massive bribery and foreign influence scandal that rocked the Senate.
Bob Menendez, who once held a position of great responsibility, is now tainted by greed and betrayal.
Federal prosecutors have urged the court to impose a minimum sentence of 15 years on the former senator.
Menendez, found guilty of a significant corruption scheme, allegedly sold out his high office for gold bars, cash, and luxury items, gravely abusing his power.
He stands as the first senator to be convicted of serving as a foreign agent while holding a Senate leadership position.
Menendez was convicted on 16 counts of corruption, including promoting the interests of the Egyptian government and accepting substantial bribes.
A Federal Bureau of Investigation raid seized $150,000 in gold bars, $480,000 in cash, and a Mercedes-Benz from his home, linking these items to bribes from New Jersey businessmen.

The former senator’s crimes amount to an extraordinary attempt to corrupt the nation’s core sovereign powers over foreign relations and law enforcement.
Menendez was chairing the Senate Foreign Relations Committee when charged in 2023 and ultimately resigned from his Senate seat in August of that year.
His wife, Nadine, faces similar charges, set to go on trial soon, accused of receiving paychecks for a non-existent job, VOA News reports.
The Menendez scandal even extends to two businessmen, Wael Hana and Fred Daibes, convicted alongside him, with prosecutors recommending a 10-year sentence for Hana and nine years for Daibes.
Bob Menendez reportedly engaged in rampant corruption and foreign influence schemes, exploiting his powerful position for years.
During his tenure, he aided in granting a monopoly to Wael Hana’s company for certifying meat exports to Egypt, displacing other businesses.
His actions included supporting Egyptian government positions over fellow U.S. Senators and providing Egypt with non-public information.
“Menendez, who swore an oath to represent the United States and the state of New Jersey, instead put his high office up for sale in exchange for this hoard of bribes,” prosecutors wrote, cited by Fox News.
Menendez’s sentencing is slated for January 29, 2025, marking a historic turn of events.
