Senators Take Aim at Supreme Court

(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – Sparking outrage among conservatives, Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Peter Welch (D-VT) took aim at the US Supreme Court as they have proposed a constitutional amendment to limit its justices’ terms.

The proposed amendment, introduced by both senators, suggested nonrenewable 18-year terms for new Supreme Court justices, with a new term beginning every two years.

This radical change would fundamentally alter the structure of the Court, potentially opening the door to further liberal manipulation of the judiciary system.

While proponents asserted this move aims to address concerns over the Court’s politicization and restore confidence in its impartiality, it is clear that this is nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to weaken conservative influence on the bench.

Manchin, who will be retiring at the end of the year, stated, “The current lifetime appointment structure is broken and fuels polarizing confirmation battles and political posturing that has eroded public confidence in the highest court in our land.”

This statement ignores the fact that lifetime appointments were designed to protect justices from political pressure and ensure their independence.

“Taking action to restore public trust in our nation’s most powerful Court is as urgent as it is necessary,” Welch stated.

He continued, “setting term limits for Supreme Court Justices will cut down on political gamesmanship and is commonsense reform supported by a majority of Americans. I’m proud to lead this effort with Senator Manchin to restore Americans’ faith in our judicial system.”

The proposal maintains a nine-justice limit and includes a grandfather clause for current justices.

However, this does not negate the fact that it is a direct assault on the Constitution and the Founding Fathers’ vision for an independent judiciary.

The left’s obsession with “reforming” the Court stems from their inability to accept decisions that do not align with their progressive agenda.

Proponents of this amendment cite low public confidence in the Supreme Court, with only 16% of Americans expressing strong confidence in it.

Furthermore, the amendment process requires a two-thirds majority in Congress and ratification by three-fourths of the states, making it a challenging endeavor.
