Cole Bridges, also known as Cole Gonzales, has been sentenced to 14 years behind bars, the US Justice Department has announced.
He is getting punished for attempting to support ISIS with vital military information aimed at ambushing U.S. troops.
Assigned to the Third Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia, since 2019, Bridges failed to protect the nation he swore to serve.
Before joining the Army, Bridges consumed jihadist propaganda, expressing his loyalty to ISIS online.
This allegiance to terror wasn’t merely a passing phase. In October 2020, the Army member began communicating with an FBI covert employee posing as a fellow ISIS supporter.
From tactical guidance to training material, Bridges handed over crucial elements to what he believed were ISIS fighters.
His goal was clear: provide ISIS with everything needed to wreak havoc on U.S. forces.
In January 2021, he even sent videos donning his U.S. Army body armor, pledging support to the terrorist organization.
For Bridges, ISIS’s global caliphate vision overshadowed his duty to America.
“Today’s sentence makes clear that that this Office—along with our partners in law enforcement and the U.S. military—will work tirelessly to bring to justice those who, like Bridges, seek to harm members of our Armed Forces,” said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams.
The FBI and numerous military and legal entities collaborated to investigate and prosecute this case.
It was a combined effort that ensured the safety of our troops from one of their own. Prosecutors from the Southern District of New York, with guidance from the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section, worked relentlessly to bring Bridges to justice.
This sentencing should be a wake-up call to any individual contemplating similar treachery.
Brigadier General Rhett R. Cox emphasized the successful partnership between Army Counterintelligence and law enforcement.
“We will continue to work together to ensure the safety and security of our Army and our nation,” he asserted, cited by The Hill.
“The conviction and sentencing of this former Soldier is a testament to the dedication and hard work of Army Counterintelligence Command special agents and law enforcement partners. We are grateful for the support of the Department of Justice and FBI in helping to bring this case to a successful conclusion,” added Cox, the commanding general of Army Counterintelligence Command.
