Steve Mensch, the president and general manager of Tyler Perry Studios, tragically died in a plane crash in Homosassa, Florida.
Just 60 miles north of Tampa, the crash involved a single-engine Vans RV-12IS plane registered to Mensch himself.
Federal investigations by the FAA and NTSB are ongoing to determine what went wrong, Fox 5 Atlanta reports.
Mensch’s influence extended far beyond Tyler Perry Studios.
As a strong advocate for the film industry, he brought over $1 billion in film tax credits to Georgia, making the state a major hub for film and television production.
His career saw him collaborating with Feature Systems, Turner Broadcasting, and helping launch the Georgia Production Partnership.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp remarked on the loss, “Marty, the girls, and I were saddened to learn of Steve Mensch’s passing.”
“A good man and an instrumental part of a studio Georgia is proud to call its own, his achievements made our state better and brought more opportunities to its people. His loved ones and the entire Tyler Perry Studios team will be in our thoughts and prayers as they mourn this loss,” Kemp added.
Mensch, who joined Tyler Perry in 2016, helped plan and build a studio in China and was crucial to opening Third Rail Studios in Atlanta.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens also expressed his condolences, remembering Mensch as a trusted friend and a pioneer in elevating Atlanta in the global film industry.
Despite the tragedy, Mensch’s legacy continues with Tyler Perry Studios poised to remain a powerhouse in entertainment.
Mensch’s family, including his wife Danila and three children, along with the industry, mourns a leader whose vision brought innumerable opportunities to Georgia.
Tyler Perry himself honored Mensch, stating, “I’m praying for his family as we all try to make sense of this heartbreak.”
