Plans to expand this program signal meaningful reform at a time when taxpayers demand responsible financial management.

The U.S. Social Security Administration and the Department of the Treasury’s Bureau of Fiscal Service teamed up to halt and recover more than $31 million in improper payments sent to those no longer living.

This strategic collaboration underscores a broader commitment to combat fraud and misuse of public funds across government programs, The New York Post reports.

Driving this effort is the “Full Death Master File,” a robust federal database containing over 142 million records of the deceased, spanning more than a century of data.

Through temporary access granted in the 2021 omnibus appropriations bill, the Treasury has increased death matches by a staggering 139%, enhancing the timeliness of correcting payment errors.

“These results are just the tip of the iceberg,” according to Treasury’s Fiscal Assistant Secretary David Lebryk.

The Treasury anticipates recovering over $215 million during the three-year period ending in 2026, showcasing this project’s potential impact.

With effective use of the Full Death Master File, the access to which expires in 2026, the data’s role in fraud reduction becomes undeniably clear.

David Lebryk notes the immense benefits if Congress grants permanent access to this crucial data file, stating, “Congress granting permanent access to the Full Death Master File will significantly reduce fraud, improve program integrity, and better safeguard taxpayer dollars.”

In alignment with Donald Trump’s “Save America” agenda, the program supports a long-term, sustainable approach to preserving national fiscal health.

The new administration under Trump, yet to respond on continuing these initiatives, holds the potential for permanent adoption of these practices.

With the appointment of Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), efficiency and regulation reduction stand centerfold in the ongoing “Save America” drive.

It’s a promising start in a long-overdue process to clean up federal program waste.

As Americans grapple with the misuse of their hard-earned tax dollars, initiatives like these offer hope and highlight the importance of vigilance in government spending, notes The International Business Times.

With continued focus and clear objectives, there is a plausible route to reduce fraud, safeguard funds, and restore faith in government program integrity.
