Subsequently, Fico’s life was in danger but he underwent extensive surgery and, according to official statements, and his condition has stabilized, The Guardian and The New York Post report.

The video captures a scene of chaos where Prime Minister Robert Fico, while engaging with constituents on Wednesday afternoon, was targeted by an assailant clad in a white shirt who brandished a firearm through a crowd.

The sequence of gunshots caused Fico, aged 59, to stagger backward before law enforcement and security personnel subdued the assailant, as seen in videos shared across social media platforms.

Fico sustained injuries from at least two bullets, one of which penetrated his abdomen. After enduring surgery for over three hours, his condition improved significantly.

“As far as I know the operation went well, and I guess in the end he will survive. He’s not in a life-threatening situation at this moment,” Deputy Prime Minister Tomáš Taraba told the BBC.

Taraba noted that Fico was “heavily injured” during the incident, emphasizing that the promptness of the emergency intervention was crucial in preserving his life.

Initial reports were grim, with Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj-Eštok describing Fico’s condition as “extraordinarily serious” and stating he was “fighting for his life.”

Further details revealed by Šutaj-Eštok indicated that the motive behind the attack was political, linked to the outcomes of the recent presidential election. This assertion was echoed on Fico’s official Facebook page, which labeled the incident an assassination attempt.

Additional video from the incident site showed the suspect being forcibly restrained and handcuffed by security forces. Another segment displayed a gravely wounded Fico being swiftly transported by his security team to a government vehicle, which then hurried away.

The attack unfolded in Handlova, located approximately 90 miles northeast of Slovakia’s capital, Bratislava.

Photographs from the event depicted a middle-aged white male with a blood-stained head in police custody.

The wannabe assassin was later identified as Juraj Cintula, a 71-year-old writer, poet, and “liberal activist.”

Another video footage that has been leaked online showed Cintula, seemingly after his arrest, handcuffed on a chair and explaining why he shot the prime minister.

“I did it because I don’t agree with the policy of the government of my country”, Cintula says in Slovakian.
