On Tuesday afternoon, reports started to emerge about an incident that seemed to be straight out of a spy novel or action movie, WND reports.
It is alleged that up to 4,000 Hezbollah members in Lebanon as well as neighboring Syria were injured when their pagers exploded simultaneously.
Reports from Reuters indicate that over 1,000 pagers detonated, and some Hezbollah members reported the devices felt warm before they exploded.
Videos of the incident show many looking at their pagers after receiving a mass message, leading to the explosions for those who did not throw the devices away in time.
Iran’s Mehr News Agency reported that Mojtaba Amani, the Islamic Republic’s ambassador to Lebanon, was injured in these synchronized blasts.
Following the incident, which has been blamed on Israel – though Israel has not acknowledged responsibility – Hezbollah directed its members to dispose of their pagers.
These devices were new models received recently, which were produced by a Taiwan-based company.
In Lebanon’s capital Beirut, chaos ensued as hundreds of Hezbollah members’ pagers exploded simultaneously.
This incident highlights the irony of Hezbollah’s reliance on pagers and couriers, which were believed to be more secure and less traceable than cell phones, and supposedly harder for Israel to hack.

After the explosion of Hezbollah’s encrypted pager devices began across Lebanon and Syria, reports on Twitter indicated ongoing sirens in Beirut, with a steady flow of ambulances heading to the American University Hospital.
The incident coincided with the revelation that the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) had thwarted a Hezbollah plan to assassinate a former high-ranking Israeli security official with a remote-controlled bomb.
There is no current indication that the exploding pagers were in retaliation for this thwarted plot, but such a large-scale operation by Israel would likely have been in development for some time.
“Lebanon’s health ministry denies the widespread reports that the death toll in the country from the Hezbollah pager explosions has risen to 11 and some 4,000 have been injured, lowering the tallies to those that were previously given by the ministry. ‘The confirmed death toll is thus 9, and the tally of injured is 2,750,’” The Times of Israel reported.
