The US government technically reached the borrowing limit of $31.4 trillion in January and risks defaulting as early as June 1st unless Congress agrees to raise the debt ceiling, according to the Treasury Department.
Biden and the Democrats have demanded that it be done unconditionally, but the GOP has put forth a plan to approve a deal in exchange for trillions of dollars of budget deficit cuts over the next ten years.
The Biden administration has engaged in talks with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the leader of the Republican majority in the chamber, which has infuriated the far-left Democrats, Breitbart News reports.
US Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), described as “extreme-left,” warned on Tuesday that any reductions of federal spending – “including obsolete pandemic funding” – would spark street protests.
“I think there would be a huge backlash from our entire House Democratic caucus, certainly the progressives — but also in the streets,” Jayapal told CNN.
She insisted on standing by the Biden administration’s spending agenda, which the report characterized as “reckless” and “fueling systemic inflation.”
“It’s important we don’t take steps back from the very strong agenda that president himself shepherd and led over the past two years,” the progressivist argued.
Another radical left Democrat, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), voiced a similar warning.
“It’s going to be a problem,” AOC told CNN when asked about the possibility of Biden agreeing to slash or cap spending.
Recalling the White House’s previous non-negotiation position on raising the debt ceiling, Ocasio-Cortez criticized the administration for initiating talks through the debt ceiling negotiations.
“We do not legislate through the debt ceiling for this very reason,” she said.
On Monday, House Speaker McCarthy met with Biden administration officials for negotiations on a debt ceiling deal.
“I felt we had a productive discussion. We don’t have an agreement yet,” the top House Republican commented after the talks.
“The tone tonight was better than any other time we’ve had discussions,” McCarthy said further.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned that the federal government could default on its debt as early as June 1st.
Some Wall Street analysts have forecast the “X-date” of default would likely be June 8 or 9.
Breitbart notes that Yellen refuses to offer greater transparency of how long the government would be able to operate without a borrowing limit agreement. Some Republicans disagree with her warning.
“June 1st? Everybody knows that’s false,” Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) commented on Twitter.
“I don’t believe June 1st is the real deadline for default. Why aren’t we making @SecYellen show her work before Congress?” Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) tweeted in turn.
