Two high-speed trains collided near Adamuz in southern Spain on Sunday, January 18, 2026, killing at least 39 people and injuring approximately 152 others. The Iryo train traveling from Málaga to Madrid derailed and crossed onto an adjacent track, striking an oncoming train bound from Madrid to Huelva.
Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente confirmed the death toll rose from an initial report of 21 fatalities, warning the number remained preliminary as rescue operations continued.

Rescue Operations Underway Amid Severe Injuries
Emergency crews worked through the night under challenging conditions to extract victims from the wreckage. Spanish officials reported 75 people required hospitalization, with 15 in very serious condition and five fighting for their lives.
The Iryo train carried approximately 300 passengers at the time of impact. Spain’s prime minister scheduled a visit to the crash site to assess the emergency response and coordinate federal assistance for victims and their families.
Infrastructure Questions Emerge Over Recent Renovations
Transport Minister Puente described the accident as “extremely strange,” noting it occurred on a straight section of track that underwent extensive renovation work completed just eight months prior in May 2025.
The derailment involved a “relatively new” high-speed train on what should have been a safe stretch of railway. Puente acknowledged the difficulty in explaining how such a catastrophic failure occurred on recently upgraded infrastructure, promising a thorough investigation into the circumstances.
Rail Service Suspended as Investigation Begins
Spanish authorities suspended all train service between Madrid and the Andalusia region while investigators examine the crash site and determine the cause of the derailment. Iryo, the private company operating the derailed train, activated emergency protocols and pledged full cooperation with authorities.
