(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – One of the most conservative justices on the US Supreme Court, Clarence Thomas, has recused himself from a case that saw the court snubbing an appeal by a former legal adviser to Donald Trump, who asserted that the acting vice president could reject certification of the 2020 election results.
By recusing himself, Thomas proved his critics wrong, as they said he would not do so as they keep trying to paint Thomas as unethical.
On Monday, the Supreme Court rejected a request by constitutional law professor John Eastman to overturn a lower court’s ruling that his efforts to dispute the results from the 2020 election may have constituted a crime.
In the wake of the 2020 election, Eastman argued that then-Vice President Mike Pence could avoid the certification of the results, National Review notes in a report.
However, US District Judge David Carter for the Central District of California has ruled that, since the defendant’s efforts were potentially criminal, the former January 6 House select committee had the right to access Eastman’s emails archived by Chapman University, his employer at the time.
“The illegality of the plan was obvious. Our nation was founded on the peaceful transition of power… President Trump vigorously campaigned for the vice president to single-handedly determine the results of the 2020 election,” Carter wrote in his ruling.
“Based on the evidence, the court finds it more likely than not that President Trump corruptly attempted to obstruct the joint session of Congress on January 6, 2021,” he added.
The report notes that the ruling did not have practical ramifications since the House committee had already obtained and released Eastman’s emails. However, the Trump ally argued it had hurt his reputation.
“The crime-fraud ruling of the district court imposes a stigma not only on petitioner but also on his former client, the former president of the United States and current candidate for the presidency in 2024,” Eastman’s now-rejected Supreme Court petition stated.
Justice Clarence Thomas, a member of the conservative majority on the Supreme Court bench, recused himself from the case on Monday without offering any public reasons for doing so.
According to National Review, his recusal might have to do with the fact that John Eastman previously worked for Thomas as a clerk – or it might be connected with recent reports that the justice’s wife, Ginni, was in contact with John Eastman around the time of the 2020 election.
Ginni Thomas was also in touch with Trump’s then-White House Chief of Staff, Mark Meadows.
Eastman is also among the 19 people, including Trump and Meadows, who have been indicted in Georgia for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 election in the state.
