(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – The Biden administration is currently deliberating a policy most conservatives find outrageous as it would confer legal status to hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens who are currently residing in the United States but are married to American citizens.
Key figures from the White House and the Department of Homeland Security are exploring methods to provide deportation reprieve or work permits to illegal migrants who have established long-term residency in the United States, with a specific focus on mixed-status families, The Wall Street Journal reports, cited by The Daily Caller.
Mixed-status families are generally composed of one illegal migrant parent along with a spouse and children who are either U.S. citizens or hold legal permanent residency.
The administration’s preferred strategy to assist these families involves employing an existing immigration mechanism known as “parole in place,” according to The Wall Street Journal.
Originally, this program was designed to allow military veterans’ spouses to stay in the country on a smaller scale.
It is administered on an individual basis by immigration officials and typically permits a foreign national who entered the U.S. illegally to remain temporarily.
By granting parole in place to these undocumented spouses, they would become eligible for work permits, and it would significantly streamline their green card applications, paving the way toward citizenship.
Current estimates suggest there are over 10 million undocumented migrants in the U.S., with about 1 million of these married to a U.S. citizen.
However, advocacy group FWD.us posits that fewer than 700,000 of these would meet the criteria for eligibility.
Administration officials reportedly view this group as particularly deserving of sympathy, similar to the young undocumented migrants known as “Dreamers,” even as public sentiment toughens regarding security at the southern border.
The proposal from the White House has already encountered opposition from proponents of strict immigration enforcement.
“Proposals like this show just how lawless the Biden administration really is. The Immigration and Nationality Act very clearly states that people who enter the country illegally are not eligible for employment authorization or permanent resident status,” stated Matt O’Brien, director of investigations at the Immigration Reform Law Institute.
“Neither marriage to a US citizen, nor being a parent to a US citizen child, entitles anyone to an exemption from the INA. And any changes to that legal reality would require Congress to pass new statutes,” O’Brien elaborated, asserting that such actions constitute “mass amnesty without Congressional authorization.”
