With Trump’s promise to eliminate federal taxes on overtime and increase SALT deductions, this bill has garnered significant support.

But amid the enthusiasm, the bill faces a steep challenge in the Senate.

The FOP, the largest police union in the United States, supports key provisions of the bill aimed at enhancing the financial well-being of law enforcement officers.

The act proposes tax deductions for overtime earnings, a vital source of income for officers across the nation.

The bill also suggests increasing the state and local tax (SALT) deduction, a move applauded by FOP National President Patrick Yoes.

This proposal, first introduced by Trump during his 2024 campaign, is seen as more than just a legislative measure—it is a commitment to those who protect the community.

“The ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act’ is more than legislation—it is a promise kept to public safety officers across the country and a bold step toward an economy that respects, rewards, and uplifts the people who keep it safe,” said Patrick Yoes.

He asserts that the bill’s passage is essential for maintaining a fair and supportive economic environment for law enforcement professionals.

Despite its narrow success in the House, with a vote of 215-214, the bill faces opposition in the Senate.

Concerns circulate, particularly among Republicans from lower-tax states, that increased SALT caps may incentivize high-tax policies in blue states.

Moreover, Rep. Rich McCormick raised alarms over the potential $385 billion rise in the U.S. deficit due to the SALT provision, Fox News reports.

The bill’s benefits are clear for residents of high-cost areas like New York City and Los Angeles, where the current SALT deduction cap is considered disadvantageous.

Yoes highlighted that these deductions are crucial for law enforcement officers who often must reside near their work jurisdictions.

Eliminating federal income taxes on officers’ crucial overtime work would lift an unfair burden.

“President Trump first proposed the elimination of Federal income taxes on overtime while still a candidate, and we are very pleased that a similar provision is included in the ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill Act,’” Yoes said.

FOP’s endorsement of the act aligns with Trump’s broader agenda of securing tax cuts and reinforcing law and order.

The administration touts the legislation as a historic opportunity, alongside promises of deficit reduction and border security enhancements.

At its core, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” shines a spotlight on President Trump’s enduring support for law enforcement.

As the bill sits in the hands of the Senate, many watch eagerly, recognizing that its outcome could significantly influence not just law enforcement officers, but also the broader cultural and political landscape.
