US Commitment to Ukraine in Doubt?

(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – President Joe Biden’s administration might be leading the nation towards another giant foreign and security policy failure as its commitment to backing Ukraine against Russia’s aggression is growing murkier, according to Biden supporters and former officials.

Enthusiasts of President Biden and ex-US officials are currently voicing their frustration and bewilderment concerning the administration’s approach towards Ukraine, which has been fighting off Russia for over two years now, The Hill writes in a report.

The administration has recently expressed opposition to proposals advocating for the US-led NATO alliance and Western allies to assume a more significant leadership role in the future.

This stance comes at a time when financial assistance from the U.S. to combat Russian forces has been delayed in Congress for an extended period.

“There is a disagreement in the U.S. government about this, and I won’t predict how it comes out,” remarked Ivo Daalder, a past US envoy to NATO and the head of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.

The forthcoming weeks are critical, with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) vowing to introduce a new aid package for Ukraine.

However, the extent of this package and Johnson’s ability to counteract opposition from his party members remain uncertain.

Should this effort fail or not meet the expectations of the Democrats, Biden may encounter intensified demands to endorse a coalition less centered around the U.S. to support Ukraine in its conflict against Russia.

Daalder and Karen Donfried, a former Assistant Secretary of State, proposed in a Foreign Affairs article that NATO should assume control of the U.S.-led Ramstein group, which oversees weapons deliveries to Kyiv, among other suggestions now under discussion by NATO ahead of their July summit.

“The United States needs to get off the high horse that we know everything,” Daalder articulated in response to a query from The Hill during a summit hosted by Georgetown’s Center for Security Studies.

“There are elements in the U.S. government who strongly oppose this, mainly because they think they’re better at it when it comes to coordinating than NATO,” he added.

In an interview with The Hill, Donfried indicated that their proposals aim to enhance the current policy direction of the administration by devising tangible actions amidst uncertainties concerning the U.S.’s long-term commitments.

“It ensures continuity at a time where you have a political election looming,” Donfried, who retired from the State Department in March 2023, said.

Ukraine finds itself in a dire situation. U.S. military officials have informed Congress that the Ukrainians are rationing artillery due to a lack of further American aid, placing them at a greater disadvantage against the Russian military.
