Ex-GOP Rep. Slams ‘Populist Wave’?!

Congress

(TheLastPatriotNews.com) – In yet another sign of a rift among conservatives inside the GOP, a former Republican congressman, who has just resigned from Congress, has slammed what he says is a “populist wave” that has shattered full-fledged conservatism.

In the context of his extensive career within the United States House of Representatives, spanning nearly a decade – from 2015 until 2024, Ken Buck established himself as a staunch conservative, Business Insider writes in a report cited by DNyuz.

However, in a recent interview with The Washington Post, Buck disclosed that over time, a noticeable shift occurred among some of his conservative colleagues.

This shift was characterized by a departure from the initial conservative focus on reducing government expenditure, towards a concentrated effort to protect former President Donald Trump from any form of critique, simultaneously embracing increased partisanship.

“I think that the populist wave has eroded the conservative values that I had when I came to this place,” Buck lamented in his conversation with the newspaper.

“Now we’re impeaching people like it’s some kind of carnival and the Constitution is just a thing of the past to the very same people who were Tea Party patriots 10 to 12 years ago,” he complained further.

In February, Buck was among the mere trio of House Republicans who opposed the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Mayorkas found himself at odds with GOP leaders concerning the Biden administration’s immigration strategies.

Last month, in the period leading up to his departure from Congress, the House Freedom Caucus made the decision to expel Buck from its ranks citing “nonattendance,” as reported by Axios.

In his interview with The Post, Buck also highlighted the problematic pursuit of ideologically pure legislation within the GOP.

He suggested that this pursuit has significantly hindered the party’s capability to achieve conservative successes.

Buck emphasized the necessity of consensus for legislative triumphs on Capitol Hill.

He argued that “you have to have consensus” to navigate the complex dynamics and secure victories in such a politically charged environment.
